The December Exhibition is traditionally the platform for artists from the city and region of Winterthur. For some time now, it has taken place every year in the form of a juried exhibition at the Kunsthalle and the Kunst Museum Winterthur as well as a Focus Exhibition in which artists were invited to exhibit only at the Kunst Museum Winterthur. In 2025 all artists in the region were invited to submit their portfolio; a jury of experts chose around thirty artists from these applications. For the Focus Exhibitions, however, various approaches have been tried over the years. In the past, artists chosen by the curatorial team have each invited a fellow artist, or in one instance, the museum only invited young artists who had not yet participated in exhibitions.

For 2026 the Kunst Museum Winterthur has fundamentally changed the concept of the Focus Exhibition. Instead of mounting a curated group exhibition with ten to twelve invited artists, a total of six artists were invited. Two artists at a time will each activate a cabinet room in the Museum Reinhart am Stadtgarten in parallel; this is why the exhibition is titled 3 x 2.

This concept enables the museum to grant each artist a significantly larger presence by giving them their own room and concentrating on the individual artist. It also allows the museum to fundamentally question cherished traditions of the December Exhibition and to test new approaches to supporting regional artists and improving their visibility in the Kunst Museum Winterthur.

The list of invited artists will be announced over the course of the year.
