NOT FOR YOU – Confrontation with the collection
NOT FOR YOU: Time and again Monica Bonvicini has translated the warning into artistic works. She always uses media that catch the eye of the viewer, such as pulsating light bulbs or acrylic mirrors that reflect the gaze. As a statement, NOT FOR YOU challenges its vis-à-vis and arouses curiosity – also at the Kunst Museum Winterthur, where the artist confronts the collection with her own works under this provocative motto.
Monica Bonvicini’s multimedia artistic work is socially volatile; it includes drawing, sculpture, installation, performance, photography and video. The artist constantly questions social conditions – power structures, surveillance mechanisms and gender roles –, translating them into impressive visual installations. This results in works that often refer to architecture and investigate the construction of sexual identity: leather objects, metal cages and barriers, sex swings, concrete or glass sculptures. She also questions the function of the exhibition space by reflecting its modes of presentation. In the exhibition NOT FOR YOU a concise selection of works will be juxtaposed against works of Arte Povera, which is represented in the Kunst Museum Winterthur with an extensive collection from Mario Merz to Gilberto Zorio.
Born 1965 in Venice, Monica Bonvicini studied in Berlin and Los Angeles; since 1986 she lives and works in Berlin. Since the 1990s, her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including at the Biennales of Sao Paulo, Istanbul, Berlin and Venice, where she was awarded the Golden Lion in 1999. In 2020 she received the Oskar Kokoschka Prize, the Austrian State Prize for Fine Arts.
The exhibition NOT FOR YOU marks the beginning of cooperation with Monica Bonvicini, which in future years will continue with the presentation of the monumental project Our House.
